Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic assistance program that attaches peer-assisted study sessions to historically difficult courses. The study sessions are facilitated by a trained SI peer leader who has previously received an A or B in the course.

What to Expect From a SI Session

  • SI students earn higher grades and withdraw less often than students that do not participate in SI sessions.
  • SI sessions normally occur in classrooms near the subject classroom.
  • SI sessions are open to all students in the subject and are attended on a voluntary basis.
  • SI sessions include students of varying skills and are not divided by academic ability.
  • SI leaders attend all class sessions, take notes, and read all of the assigned materials with the students, after which they conduct two or more 50-minute SI sessions each week.
  • SI leaders DO NOT assist in the preparation of examinations or grade examinations.
  • SI leaders have weekly office hours to provide students with the opportunity to get additional assistance.

Supplemental instruction is an exciting, dynamic program that is student-focused program in a number of ways. First, SI Leaders are successful students who utilize their knowledge to help other students obtain a stronger understanding of course material. Second, SI sessions encourage students to work together to grasp the material as the SI Leader facilitates the session.
