The Learning Center at the University of Cincinnati Clermont College originated in 1985 as a support center where students under-prepared in core subjects like math, reading and writing could get the help they needed to succeed in college courses. Initially called the “Learning Lab” the name was changed in the early 1990s to disrupt the connotation of experimental and provisional learning.
When The Learning Center opened, its focus was on helping under-prepared students develop core skills in literacy and numeracy. As the student population expanded, the center broadened its objectives to include generalists who tutored a variety of subjects including history, biology, anatomy and physiology, computers, and foreign languages. The focus of the center turned from developmental support to college-wide retention.
With six person professional staff and ever-expanding team of peer tutors and SI leaders, The Learning Center is now the hub for all academic assistance at UC Clermont College. Always evolving and implementing new forms of academic support, the future looks bright for The Learning Center as new programs continually appear on the horizon, and UC Clermont students enjoy greater opportunities for academic success.
