Electronic books are books that have either been reproduced into an electronic format or have been created and published in an electronic format. Many electronic books (e-books) are available free of charge, but many are not. The University of Cincinnati and OhioLINK have purchased many elctronic books and these can be found in the University Libraries' online catalog along with the print books.
Finding e-books in the University Libraries' online catalog (http://uclid.uc.edu/search/) Searching the catalog by keyword, subject, or other method will return a listing of e-books as well as print items UNLESS you limit the search by location. Limiting a search by location excludes electronic items because electronic items do not belong to any one location. (see the Library Catalog guide for further help with general searching techniques)
E-books may or may not have an [electronic resource] tag at the end of the title. But, all electronic items will have a ‘connect to’ link in the item record.
You may also limit the search to electronic items:
During a KEYWORD search, on the search screen, select ‘Internet Resources’ from the Electronic resource drop down list.
If you have already performed a search and the list of results is large, at the top of the screen, change the ‘View entire collection’ drop down list to “Online books, database, and journals’.
While e-books come from many different sources, you can browse items from some of the larger sources by searching for the source name. For example, netLibrary provides items from university presses, as well as reference and professional books. Some of the large sources of e-books in the University of Libraries' online catalog are:
netLibrary (almost 12,000 items, plus 3400 publicly accessible items)
Safari text books (over 2,000 items)
Knovel (Science and Technology Collection, almost 750 items)
Once you click on an item from one of these vendors, you may also select to browse or search the vendor’s available collection.
NOTE: If you are off campus, remember to validate yourself as a UC student, faculty, or staff before beginning your search. Also, some vendors may require some additional steps to “check-out” the book.
Spaces are ‘_’s in web addresses. Additional e-books may be found at the following sites. These sites are just a small representation of some of the free resources available.
