The Duke Energy Summer STEM Academy is a one-week, hands-on program designed to acquaint students with a variety of STEM careers and educational options. The program is open to Clermont County students who are 13, 14 or 15 years old.

STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Subjects for the UC Clermont program include high-tech design, biology, chemistry, energy, geology, health/medicine, information technology, math and physics.

In addition to classroom activities and team projects, students also will visit the Duke Energy Envision Center and other local business partners to see STEM careers first-hand.

The pilot program is open to 24 students. When the program has closed, students who apply will be included on a wait list, if desired, in the order their applications were received.

With Duke Energy’s support, cost of the program is just $75 and includes all activities, materials, an Academy T-shirt, a daily lunch, and transportation for field trips. Based on interest, a free shuttle bus also will be scheduled to pick up students in a few central locations throughout the county.

Scholarships are available for students who are income-eligible and/or will be first-generation college students in their families.

To participate in this pilot project, the student must:

  • Live in Clermont County or attend a Clermont County school.
  • Be 13, 14, or 15 years old on July 30, 2012.
  • Complete an application and submit it to UC Clermont.

Upon acceptance, a parent or guardian must:

  • Return payment or complete an application and receive a scholarship.
  • Complete a medical form for the student.
  • Complete a transportation/field trip form.
  • Complete a photo release.
