Diversity Task Force

Mission statement:

The UCCC Diversity Task Force is a group of faculty, staff, and students who share a common belief that an understanding of diverse viewpoints and cultures, and of the social processes involved in inter-group relations, is important to the pursuit of a quality education and enabling students to live, work, and contribute to society.  In addition, a welcoming and inclusive campus environment, with equity for all is essential.  We believe these goals should be pursued in every aspect of college activity, including student life, the curriculum and pedagogy, programs, staffing, training, research, and community service.

We define diversity as human and social variety that impacts people’s lives and relationships.  Diversity can be expressed through such differences as racial, ethnic, gender, age, sexual orientation, cultural, economic, disability, and religious.  Our conception of diversity is grounded in the notion that it is a necessary condition for the viability of liberty and democracy.  Thus we value diversity not for its own sake, but because it offers us the humility to recognize the partial and distorted nature of our own ways of knowing and acting.

The Diversity Task Force attempts to foster awareness and address inequalities within the campus community by offering educational events, trainings, policy recommendations, and assistance to further the goals of understanding and tolerance of difference.
