Welcome!
  • Thank you for your willingness to provide notes for a student with a disability who is in your class.  The following training guide should take about 5-10 minutes to review.  You must take the quiz at the end of the presentation and bring it with you when you complete your paperwork. This will enable you to receive your $50 check at the end of the quarter.

Why Have Notetakers?
  • Students who have a variety of disabilities can benefit from the assistance of a notetaker.
  • Students who are visually impaired may not be able to see what is written on an overhead/chalkboard and/or may not have learned how to manually write in standard English.
4
Why Have Notetakers (con’t)
  • Students with physical disabilities may not be able to manually write.
  • Students with a learning disability may not be able to listen to what the instructor is saying, process that information quickly, and write it down.
  • Students can have side effects from medication which impairs their level of concentration.
5
Student Responsibilities
  • Students who are receiving notes should make an effort to regularly attend class and take their own notes.  Your notes are used as a supplement.
  • You are not expected to tutor the student or provide copies of your own materials.
  • You do not work for the student and they should not treat you as an employee!
6
Notetaker Responsibilities
  • The student should identify him/herself to you.  Please respect the student’s privacy and do not discuss your arrangement with others.
  • Notify the Disability Services Office if the student misses more than a few classes.
  • You are expected to attend class regularly!
7
Yikes!  There Are 2 Students in the Class Who Need Notes!
  • If more than one student in the class needs copies of notes, you will be notified by the Disability Services Office.
  • If you attend class during the day, you can make copies in Room 101 of the Student Services Building.
  • If you are an evening student, you can still use the carbonless pad but you will need to drop off a copy to the Notes drop box in Room 101 of the Student Services Building.  We will take care of making the additional copy and getting the copies to the students.
  • You can also choose to send the notes electronically.

What Students Who Receive Notes Wish You Would Know…
  • Just because something is not written on the board/overhead doesn’t mean it is not important!
  • If the instructor uses PowerPoint or hands out notes to the entire class, the student still needs to have additional comments/information written on these materials as they are discussed. Please do not turn in “blank” copies.  These are not helpful!

Technical Tips for Notetakers
  • Make your notes clear and concise.
  • Record all pertinent information (main ideas, discussion threads, etc.), especially when it relates to information for a test or major assignment.
  • The student should receive a copy of the  notes within 24 hours!
  • Have regular conversations with the student to ensure that your efforts meet their needs.
