Clermont College Baseball Begins Inaugural Season March 21-22, 2008
The Clermont College Cougar Baseball Team began its inaugural baseball season with a four game, 2 day set against the Indiana University Southeast Grenadiers. IU/SE had already played 15 games going into the weekend series. Due to weather issues, the Cougars’ opening day, scheduled for March 1 was cancelled as well as eight other scheduled matches. The Grenadiers took full advantage of the 15 game experience and swept the series against the Cougars. Friday was a beautiful day with temperatures approaching the low 60’s, and the Grenadiers won both games of the doubleheader, 7-0 and 13-5. Saturday’s weather was blustery and cold, temperatures only making it into the low 40’s, but that didn’t stop the Grenadiers’ winning streak and they easily beat the Cougars 8-1 and 10-1. Highlights for the Cougars were few: Shawn Howser, a junior from Western Brown High School pitched 4 solid innings in the first game, leaving after reaching his pitch count, trailing just 2-0. Shawn had 4 strikeouts and gave up just 3 hits. Nic Costanzo, a freshman from Mariemont High School and first baseman for the Cougars, delivered the first hit in Cougar history with a single to centerfield in the top of the second inning. The IU Southeast Grenadiers are members of the NAIA and play in the KIAC Conference.
COUGARS SPRING ROAD TRIP CONTINUES ON A LOSING NOTE March 24-26, 2006
The Clermont College Cougars continued their Spring Road Trip after a brief stop at home in order to celebrate Easter with their families. They headed out on March 24 to play a 9-inning contest against the University of the Cumberland Patriots. The game began in a snow squall and ended with the sun shining and temperatures reaching the upper 50’s. The Patriots, an NAIA Nationally Ranked Team (#14), had a record of 22-5 going into Monday’s matchup. The disparity between the teams showed and the Patriots won handily, 14-3. The Cougars had few highlights. First Baseman, Nic Costanzo (Freshman/Mariemont HS) collected 2 hits and Bobby Noeth (freshman/Western Brown) doubled, driving in two runs.
The fledgling Cougars team fared no better on Tuesday afternoon. On a beautiful spring day in Southern Kentucky (sunny, mid-60’s), the NAIA Nationally Ranked (#13) Union Bulldogs dispatched the Cougars summarily, 10-0. The Bulldogs came into the game with a 24-6 record and the Cougars were no match for them, as this was only their sixth game of the season. Pitcher Jerry Neely (freshman/Glen Este HS) threw four solid innings and First Baseman, Nic Costanzo (freshman/Mariemont HS) collected two hits, brightening the spirits of the battered Cougar troops.
The weather improved as the Cougars headed north towards Lexington to play another Kentucky powerhouse, the St. Catharine’s Patriots (ranked #13 in the National Junior College Athletic Association {NJCC}). The Patriots were 14-1 going into Wednesday’s Doubleheader. The Cougars took two more beatings, 10-2 and 11-1. Pitcher Dane Garrett (freshman/Goshen HS) pitched three solid innings and Third Baseman, Brady Denton (freshman/McNicholas HS) collected two hits in the first game. COUGARS BEAT ANDERSON IN HISTORIC HOME OPENER March 29, 2008
In the historic first home game for the Clermont College Cougars, played at UC’s Clifton Main Campus, the fledgling team scored a 6-5 win against the Anderson Ravens. The Ravens compete in the Heartland Collegiate Conference. Although this was a non-conference game, it bears noting that the Ravens are an NCAA Division IIII program.
Anderson jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Clermont answered quickly with 3 runs scored in the bottom of the 2nd. Anderson regained the lead at the top of the fifth inning. The Cougars rallied in the bottom of the fifth to tie the Ravens. In the bottom of the sixth, the Cougars hit one more runner home to claim the lead for the rest of the game. Anderson’s record stands at 13-6, while Clermont’s stats are 2-8.

COUGARS OPEN CONFERENCE PLAY WITH DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP April 6, 2008
Led by superb complete game performances by Jerry Neely (freshman/Glen Este; 1-1) and Zach Zuke (freshman/Purcell Marion; 2-1), the Clermont College Cougar baseball team collected their first two ORCC West Conference wins with victories against the Miami/Middletown Thunderhawks (6-0 & 11-1). The weather at the West Chester WCBO Fields was sunny with temps in the low 60’s on Sunday. After several days of rain, the grounds crew at WCBO did a fantastic job readying the fields for play.
In the first game, Neeley kept the Thunderhawks off balance and pitched a shut out. Zach Zuke continued the mastery over the Thunderhawk hitters, giving up just one run in seven innings of play. 3rd Baseman Brady Denton (freshman/McNicholas) had 3 hits, including a home run and a double, and collected 7 RBI’s for the day. Leftfielder Joey Fehr (freshman/Colerain) collected 2 hits as did 2nd baseman Derek Cooper.

The Cougars never got on track offensively and lost both games, 9-2 and 5-0. The Cougars drop to 5-12 overall.
COUGARS BACK ON TRACK WITH DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP April 20, 2008
The Cougars hosted ORCC Conference rival, the OU/Chillicothe Hilltoppers at Midland field in Amelia Sunday. Temperatures topped out near 60 degrees and the skies were overcast.
Clermont jumped on top early in both games with strong pitching by Jerry Neely (freshman/Glen Este) and Zach Zuke (freshman/Purcell Marion). Both pitchers threw well with Neeley completing the game allowing just one run and Zuke threw 5 innings, with 2 runs allowed.
In Game one, 3rd baseman Andrew Boelleke (freshman/McNicholas) had a double and 2 RBI’s. Shortstop Bobby Noeth (freshman/Western Brown) had a double and 2 RBI’s as well.
Game 2 saw DH CJ Hillberg (freshman/Madeira) go 2 for 3 with a triple and 2 runs batted in. 1st Baseman Nic Costanzo (freshman/Mariemont) collected 2 hits and drove in 4 runs.
With these victories, the Cougars improved their record to 7-12 overall, 5-1 in ORCC West conference play.
COUGARS LOSE 2 MORE TO CONFERENCE RIVALS April 22-23, 2008
In the ORCC conference battle for 1st place, the Miami/Hamilton Harriers held off the Clermont Cougars in 2 hotly contested games this week (5-4 and 3-2). Ryan Stang (freshman/Colerain) pitched Tuesday at Foundation Field in Hamilton and Wednesday’s game at Midland Field in Amelia was pitched by Ryan Bucher (freshman/Mason). Both men threw very well and Shawn Howser (junior/Western Brown) threw a shutout inning in relief on Wednesday. Miami/Hamilton’s closer, Steve Adams, shut down a Cougar rally late in the 7th inning Wednesday. Bobby Pangallo (sophomore/McNicholas) had 2 key doubles, one in each game.
With these two wins, Miami/Hamilton is virtually assured 1st Place in the ORCC West Conference. The Clermont Cougars’ record moves to 7-14, 5-3 ORCC West.
COUGARS ACHIEVE 1st YEAR GOAL, SWEEP MIAMI/MIDDLETOWN THUNDERHAWKS IN DOUBLEHEADER Saturday, April 26, 2008
Clermont Cougars Head Coach Joe Spriggs set two main goals at the beginning of this, the inaugural season for Cougar Baseball: to finish in at least second place and to have a winning record in the ORCC Western Conference. Both goals were realized on Saturday in Middletown, OH. The fledgling Clermont Cougars beat the Miami/Middletown Thunderbirds in both games of the weekend doubleheader, 14-6 and 1-0.
Game one was an offensive game, with 20 runs scored by both teams. Cougar pitcher Jerry Neely (freshman/Glen Este) struggled, but pitched four innings and notched his 3rd victory of the season. Ryan Stang (freshman/Colerain) gave a solid 3 inning relief effort to gain his second save of the season. 2nd Baseman Derek Cooper (freshman/Milford) collected four hits, including 2 doubles and drove in three runs. Shortstop Bobby Noeth (freshman/Western Brown) collected 3 hits and drove in two runs. CJ Hillberg (freshman/Madeira) had 3 hits as well. Right fielder Pat Schneider (freshman/Western Brown) and 1st Baseman Nic Costanzo (freshman/Mariemont) both had two hits and 3 RBI’s. Centerfielder Bobby Pangallo (sophomore/McNicholas) and Leftfielder Joey Fehr (freshman/Colerain) also had 2 hits each. Fehr reached base 4 times in the course of the game.
Game two was an entirely different matter. It looked like it was going to be another good offensive game, when 1st baseman, Nic Costanzo (freshman/Mariemont) started the game with his second double of the day. He was stranded on base as Thunderhawk Pitcher Phillip Dickerson (Cincinnati Christian) started to gain momentum. Unfortunately for Dickerson, he was matched against Cougar Fireballer Shawn Howser (junior/Western Brown). Both pitchers retired hitters consecutively until 1st baseman Nic Costanzo returned to the plate in the top of the 4th inning. Costanzo sent Dickerson’s 2-1 pitch deep into centerfield bringing home what ended up being the game’s sole run. The ball hit the top yellow line and was ruled a Home Run by the umpire. Howser continued his mastery of the Thunderhawk hitters, striking out 12. The game took just over 1 hour and 12 minutes to play and left the Cougars with guaranteed sole second place in the ORCC Western Conference. Their record now stands at 9-14 overall and 7-3 conference.
COUGARS SPLIT WITH CLARK STATE April 27, 2008
NJCAA Superregional-bound Clark State (23-9) came into this doubleheader believing they were going to roll over the Clermont team, after trouncing them in game one 11-1. Clermont pitchers Ryan Bucher (freshman/Mason, 2-1) and Ryan Stang (freshman/Colerain) had other ideas. Bucher gave a strong performance, pitching 5 2/3 innings and giving up 4 earned runs. He left with the Cougars leading 7-4, bases loaded. Stang, after pitching 3 innings the day before, gave up a single which scored two runs, bringing the score to 7-6. It appeared that Ryan was tired, but after a pop out, a ground out and 2 strikeouts later, the crafty right-hander had secured another save, his 2nd in as many days, resulting in a 7-6 upset for the young Cougar squad. Offense in the game was led by DH CJ Hillberg (freshman/Madeira) and shortstop Bobby Noeth (freshman/Western Brown) with 3 hits a piece. 2nd baseman Derek Cooper (freshman/Milford) had 2 hits.
HARRIERS COMPLETE FOUR GAME SWEEP OF COUGARS April 29, 2008
It appears that the only Conference losses endured by the Clermont Cougars in 2008 will come at the hands of the Miami/Hamilton Harriers. The Harriers have dominated the ORCC Western Conference for the past 3 years and they suffered a scare early in the season, as the first three games were only separated by 4 runs.
At first, it appeared this match-up would be a good one as well. In the top of the first inning, 2nd baseman Derek Cooper (freshman/Milford) was on first (by a walk) 1st baseman Nic Costanzo (freshman/Mariemont) delivered a “Kong” shot over the left field fence, banging a parked car. The Cougars early 2-0 lead was short-lived as the Clermont pitching staff took a battering for the next 4 innings. Trailing 9-2 in the seventh, centerfielder Bobby Pangallo(sophomore/McNicholas) doubled and catcher Rob Ball (freshman/Lakota East) tripled, giving the Cougars a third run. However, the threat to the Harriers was temporary and the Miami/Hamilton team racked up another win 9-2. Clermont moves to 10-16 overall and 7-4 in the ORCC West Conference.
CLERMONT BEATS OU/CHILLICOTHE TO WRAP UP ORCC CONFERENCE RECORD 8-4 April 30, 2008
A struggling OU/Chillicothe team took to their home field in what ended up being a short-lived venture for them. The Cougars scored 9 in the top half of the 1st inning on 10 walks. Centerfielder Bobby Pangallo (sophomore/McNicholas) hit a Grand Slam in the third inning. Sophomore Pitcher Nate Harris (Batavia) secured his first college win in three innings of work as the Clermont Cougars record improved to 12-16 overall and 8-4 ORCC West Conference.
CLERMONT WINS HOME FINALE AT MIDLAND VS. SOUTHERN STATE May 1, 2008

Leftfielder Joey Fehr (freshman/Colerain) and catcher Pat Schneider (freshman/Western Brown) contributed a pair of hits. The Cougars travel to Rio Grande on Sunday for a Non-Conference Doubleheader.
COUGARS DROP PAIR AT RIO GRANDE May 4, 2008
The Cougars dropped two games to the University of Rio Grande in an NAIA non-conference doubleheader at Rio Grande. The first game ended up 9-2, but the Cougars made the second game interesting.
The only offense the Cougars could muster early was a double by 2nd baseman Derek Cooper (freshman/Milford) in the 1st inning. Trailing 3-1 by the top of the fifth, DH CJ Hillberg (freshman/Madeira) singled, followed by a single from centerfield Spike Wilson (freshman/Fairfield-Leesburg). It should be noted that Wilson has pitched middle relief for the Cougars all season, appearing in a team-leading 17 games. With one out and runners on first and second, 1st baseman Nic Costanzo (freshman/Mariemont) drilled a 2-0 fastball over the right center fence to make the game 4-3 in favor of the Cougars. It was Costanzo’s 3rd homer in eight days. However, the bottom fell out in the bottom of the fifth and the Cougars took the fall 8-4. The Cougars are now 13-17 overall. The regular season finale will be Tuesday, May 6 at Cedarville College.
COUGARS FALL TO YELLOW JACKETS IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE May 6, 2008
The non-conference finale against NAIA League Champion Cedarville Yellow Jackets was a ho-hum loss for the 1st year Clermont College Cougars. The Cougar pitching could not get its footing until late, but after a 6-0 1st inning deficit, the Cougars could not claw back. Shortstop Bobby Noeth (freshman/Western Brown) and Catcher Rob Ball (freshman/Lakota East) each had a pair of hits in the 10-3 loss. Joey Fehr (freshman/Colerain) doubled sending 2 runs home in the sixth to make it 6-3. Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets quickly answered back with 4 runs in the bottom of the inning. The game was played at the Cougars’ home field, Midland in Amelia. Temperatures were in the low 70’s and the sun was shining, perfect baseball weather. The game looked like it was going to be a repeat of the teams last outing, with the Thunderhawks maintaining a 1-0 lead throughout the first 3 innings. However, some key offense broke the game wide open in the bottom of the third and the Cougars continued opening it up throughout the remaining innings. The Cougar offense was propelled by 1st baseman Nic Costanzo (freshman/Mariemont) who had 3 hits (including a double) and 5 RBI’s. Bobby Pangallo (sophomore/McNicholas) also had three hits, including a double and a triple and drove in 2 runs. Joey Fehr (freshman/Colerain) scored three times and Catcher Pat Schneider (freshman/Western Brown) had two hits. The pitching performance by freshman Ryan Stang (Colerain) was stellar.
